"The
blood christened weapon which had saved its owner's life twice within
a few seconds, was an ordinary affair with a plain wooden handle, but
when Bowie recovered from his wound he had the previous blade polished
and set into and ivory handle mounted with silver; the scabbard also being
silver mounted. Not wishing to degrade it by ordinary use, he brought
the knife to me in San Felipe to have a duplicate made. The blade was
about ten inches long and two broad at the widest part. When it became
known that I was making a genuine Bowie knife, there was a great demand
for them, so I cut a pattern and started a factory, my jobs bringing all
the way from $5.00 to $200, according to finish."

Sweet
Bowie
$850
This
is a close reproduction of that antique knife.
This is a very large knife made out of 3/16 inch thick High Carbon
Steel with a massive 14 inch long blade.
A personal note: Many people feel this Design is original back to
the 1800's and others feel the blade backing of "Brass"
dates the knife to only the 1950's with the release of the book
"The Iron Mistress". I read the book too when I was young,
and it influenced me to want to make knives and I still have an
old shop worn copy of the book.
I
personally feel the 1950's book brought many to like Bowie knives
in that era, the way First Blood, Commando, Predator and other films
and books like those by Jerry and Sharon Ahearn have had a direct
influence on collecting over more that the past 25 years. Those
knives do not date back to 1836 either, but no one can deny the
influence they have had on both collectors and even us makers. I
do not make this style of knife because I feel it original to the
1800 era. I make this Bowie for those of us that interest and knife
collecting first came about by the interest in knives created by
that one Book.
